With an invasive procedure such as a knee or hip replacement, there are known risks such as infection, blood clots, vessel injury, allergy to components, rejection to prosthetic, neurovascular damage, loss of motion, stroke/heart attack, complications from anesthesia, and an increased risk of osteoporosis.
Joint replacement in a younger patient (i.e. < 50 years old) can require a revision joint replacement every 15-20 years. This again exposes patients to the above to a greater degree and has a lower rate of success. There are also a large percentage of patients who still have pain after a total knee replacement.
For the average individual without health insurance, a knee or hip replacement could cost around $50,000 or more in the greater New York City area. With insurance, the patient can still be responsible for deductibles upwards of a couple of thousand dollars in addition to their copays. These procedures can also require several days in the hospital (an average of 3-4 days) and medical devices/home care.
Other procedures such as an ACL surgery or knee arthroscopy often results in cartilage breakdown and will create a negative environment. These can be treated with PRP, bone marrow, or fat harvested cells.
There are alternatives other than joint replacement in patients who have failed other standard non-operative treatments. Our techniques using an individual’s own stem cells from bone marrow, fat cells, and peripheral blood do not have the risk of rejection, allergy or loss of motion associated with placing a prosthetic in the joint. Instead, it creates an environment where injured tissues can heal naturally and fill in the gaps of the damaged cartilage. There is no required hospital stay, and the patient is only on crutches for a week at the most because the cells should be able to settle into the joint. Ultimately, the cost of our regenerative treatments can be less costly than the standard treatments that are “covered by insurance,” with less risk of injury and a quicker recovery.*
